Temperature

Air or ambient temperature is measured throughout the 24-hour period with a thermometer. Day or night temperatures are given to describe the weather of a day, with averages used to describe monthly, seasonal and annual temperatures.

Climate change is actually associated with reduced temperature variability, especially as cold winter days are decreasing in frequency and extremity. In the Abisko area, average annual temperatures have also shown less year-to-year variability as compared to the early 20th century, while steadily increasing overall. During both winter and summer, much of the past century’s warming has occurred since 1990. However, the frequency of abnormally warm weather events has increased most notably during the spring and autumn, which contributes to a lengthening of the summer growing season.
